What is Wellness Counseling?

Updated: Mar 6

Let's start with the name of my practice. Wellness is highlighted because I believe that where attention flows, energy goes...where energy goes, attention flows, i.e., if the focus is on wellness and ease, then that's what will be amplified. Conversely, if the focus is on dis-ease, then that is what will be amplified. It's not to minimize or discount real challenges, or to spiritually bypass, and it's not woo-woo thinking...it's neuroscience. What fires together, wires together which is typically attributed to Dan Siegel, an expert in interpersonal neurobiology....AND...it can be really challenging to train the brain to acknowledge what is here (the depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.) while energizing what kind of life wants to be lived.

It's not just about training the brain or positive affirmations; the deep layers of pain and hurt need to be released. There has to be a significant emotional experience to "replace" the other experiences [See also 'Hakomi' blog].

When I learned about the koshas in yoga, it gave me language around my belief that I had come to over the years of witnessing other people's pain as a nurse and what I knew from my own lived experience...issues not dealt with in the mental, emotional, and even spiritual realms will manifest in the physical, i.e., the body.

In yogic philosophy, the koshas are sheaths, or layers of the human experience [See also 'Yoga Nidra' blog]. The densest layer is the physical body, then the energetic body, the mind-body, the personality, and heart-centered consciousness. So if our body has all of the information from these other realms, then working with the body is the most complete & efficient way to resolve dis-ease.
