Stages Of Healing

🌿 How We Heal: The Seven Stages of Transformation

Healing isn’t linear. It’s a spiral — a return to wholeness through the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual realms. Each stage invites us to meet ourselves with compassion and curiosity, to move from survival toward embodiment and expansion.

Below is a map of the seven stages of healing, distilled for clarity and resonance.

1. Awakening — The Call to Change

This stage begins when something deep inside whispers, “I can’t keep living like this.” It’s the moment of recognition — when the mind starts questioning old stories, the emotions stir, and the body signals that something is off.

  • Mental: Confusion, overthinking, or a sense that old beliefs no longer fit.

  • Emotional: Restlessness, grief, or numbness.

  • Physical: Fatigue, tension, or disrupted sleep.

  • Spiritual: A longing for meaning or connection.

Healing here is imagined as relief — a desire to fix what hurts. But this awakening is sacred: it’s the first breath of awareness that opens the path ahead.

2. Disruption — The Unraveling

Once we begin the healing process, the system often destabilizes before it reorganizes. Old patterns surface, emotions intensify, and the body releases what’s been held.

  • Mental: Cognitive dissonance — realizing that what once made sense no longer does.

  • Emotional: Waves of anger, sadness, or fear.

  • Physical: Shaking, heat, or exhaustion as the nervous system recalibrates.

  • Spiritual: A “dark night of the soul,” questioning everything.

This stage feels chaotic, but it’s the necessary storm that clears the way for growth. Healing here is not about control — it’s about surrender.

3. Insight — Seeing with New Eyes

After the storm, clarity begins to emerge. We start to understand the patterns that shaped us and the roots of our pain.

  • Mental: Recognition of cause and effect; new perspectives.

  • Emotional: Compassion for younger parts of self.

  • Physical: Increased interoception — the ability to feel and stay with sensations.

  • Spiritual: Reconnection with intuition and meaning.

Healing becomes understanding. We begin to see ourselves not as broken, but as whole beings learning to integrate experience.

4. Repatterning — Practicing New Ways of Being

Insight alone doesn’t change behavior. This stage is about embodiment — practicing new choices until they become natural.

  • Mental: Rewriting internal narratives; challenging limiting beliefs.

  • Emotional: Responding instead of reacting; repairing relationships.

  • Physical: Building regulation skills; releasing chronic tension.

  • Spiritual: Aligning actions with values and authenticity.

Healing becomes practice. It’s the daily work of choosing presence over protection, connection over avoidance.

5. Integration — Becoming Whole

Here, the fragments of self begin to weave together. We feel more grounded, authentic, and capable of meeting life as it is.

  • Mental: Coherent self-understanding and flexible thinking.

  • Emotional: Resilience and emotional steadiness.

  • Physical: A regulated baseline; ease in the body.

  • Spiritual: A sense of belonging and alignment with purpose.

Healing becomes wholeness. It’s less about fixing and more about living from the inside out.

6. Expansion — Thriving Beyond Survival

Once stability returns, energy begins to flow freely. Creativity, joy, and purpose awaken.

  • Mental: Visioning, curiosity, and openness.

  • Emotional: Gratitude, joy, and connection.

  • Physical: Vitality and flow; the body feels alive again.

  • Spiritual: Service, meaning, and unity with something larger.

Healing becomes liberation. We move from surviving to thriving — expressing the fullness of who we are.

7. Return — Revisiting with Wisdom

Healing is cyclical. We revisit old wounds, but with new capacity and compassion.

  • Mental: Recognizing patterns without collapsing into them.

  • Emotional: Revisiting grief or fear with curiosity.

  • Physical: Faster recovery from activation; resilience.

  • Spiritual: Trusting the process; seeing challenges as invitations.

Healing becomes a lifelong spiral. Each return deepens our wisdom and strengthens our ability to hold both pain and possibility.

The Four Realms of Healing

Across all stages, healing unfolds through four interconnected realms:

Realm

Focus

Transformation

Mental

Thoughts, beliefs, narratives

From confusion → clarity

Emotional

Feelings, expression, relationships

From suppression → compassion

Physical / Somatic

Body, nervous system, embodiment

From tension → regulation

Spiritual

Meaning, purpose, connection

From separation → unity

When these realms align, healing becomes not just recovery — but evolution.

The Essence of Healing

Healing is not a destination. It’s a rhythm — a dance between contraction and expansion, between remembering and forgetting. It asks us to slow down, listen to the body, and trust the intelligence of life itself.

Each stage is an invitation:

  • Awakening calls us to awareness.

  • Disruption clears what no longer serves.

  • Insight reveals truth.

  • Repatterning teaches embodiment.

  • Integration restores coherence.

  • Expansion celebrates vitality.

  • Return reminds us that healing is never lost — only deepened.

Closing Reflection

Healing is how we come home to ourselves. It’s the courage to meet pain with presence, to transform suffering into wisdom, and to live from the truth that we are already whole.

“How We Heal” is not just a process — it’s a way of being.

Healing is a spiral — a return to wholeness through mind, body, emotion, and spirit. These seven stages outline the path, and as a somatic counselor, I can help you move through each one with regulation, embodiment, and nervous‑system support.

Here is the above material, condensed and focusing on how our work in therapy might look like as a Hakomi counselor utilizing mindful somatic psychotherapy.

1. Awakening — The Call to Change

You sense something must shift. As a somatic counselor, I can help you name what’s happening and listen to the body’s early signals.

2. Disruption — The Unraveling

Old patterns surface and emotions intensify. Somatic work offers grounding, containment, and tools to stay present as the system reorganizes.

3. Insight — Seeing with New Eyes

Clarity emerges. I will always invite your awareness back into your body. I will help you track sensations, understand patterns, and build compassion for the parts of you that adapted to survive.

4. Repatterning — New Ways of Being

Insight becomes practice. Through breath, movement, and nervous‑system regulation, you learn to respond instead of react and embody new choices.

5. Integration — Becoming Whole

Mind, body, and emotion begin to align. Somatic therapy supports coherence, steadiness, and a regulated baseline.

6. Expansion — Thriving Beyond Survival

Energy returns. As a somatic counselor, I can help you channel vitality into creativity, connection, and purpose.

7. Return — Revisiting with Wisdom

Old wounds reappear, but with new capacity. Somatic work strengthens resilience so each cycle deepens rather than destabilizes.

Healing is truly a journey that I am honored to travel with my clients on.

Others have also conceptualized how healing happens and have broken it up into stages, e.g., Donald Epstein:

The 12 Stages of Healing

The 12 stages of Healing - A network approach to wholeness

A book by Donald M Epstein with Nathaniel Altman 1994

Stage 1: Suffering

Different from pain, suffering is marked by a profound awareness that ‘something is wrong’. Parts of our being have been separated from our Inner Self - the core of our being. This especially occurs when we are confronted with a traumatic or chaotic event or loss. The lesson of this stage is the acceptance that nothing works at this time; we are presently helpless.

Stage 2: Polarities and Rhythms

The awareness that suffering involves cycles, polarities, and patterns is the essence of the stage. It begins with the search for the ‘magic genie’ who will save us from our distress, pain, or crisis. We try to gain power over our helplessness through external authorities, procedures, and treatments. Eventually, as we heal, we see that our genie is not so magical. We become aware of our rhythms and polarities, and discover that we are partially responsible for our distress.

Stage 3: Stuck in a Perspective

This stage of healing involves the recognition that our distress is associated with being stuck in a perspective. Our concepts or our physiology have been fixated. We don't need to know why we've been stuck, or what to do about it. We just need to have the simple awareness that we've been stuck.

Stage 4: Reclaiming Our Power

This stage of healing is one in which we realize that the ‘script’ determined by the above 3 stages is no longer desirable or no longer works. Initially, we are angry that we have lost our power and are determined not to let it happen again. As we progress through this stage, we no longer choose to dishonor ourselves.

Stage 5: Merging with the Illusion

This stage is associated with having a strong enough sense of self to merge with the illusion which keeps us from our ‘light’ or our ‘shadow’. With merging, the part of our nature we have alienated, disliked, or ignored is integrated into the rest of our being to create more wholeness.

Stage 6: Preparation for Resolution

In stage 6 we build momentum and flexibility. The alienated, traumatized, denied or redirected consciousness or energy is being prepared for discharge and resolution. We feel the tension building within ourselves as this process advances, and find ways to create change and improve flexibility to continue the process.

Stage 7: Resolution

This stage may involve a discharge of the muscular system, such as movement of the extremities, or processes such as fever, coughing, sneezing, crying, screaming, and laughing. When the discharge occurs after the previous six stages, and a sense of accomplishment, peace, and inner strength accompanies the process, then resolution has been achieved.

Stage 8: Emptiness in Connectedness

After the resolution and discharge we are emptied. This is not a space of nothingness, but instead a place of possibilities. We enter into a state of gratitude, vulnerability, connection with our external rhythms, and alignment with events around us. We expect serendipity to be available for us it's a natural way of life.

Stage 9: Light Behind the Form

From our place of emptiness and gratitude we become aware of our fullness of light and energy. We experience that we are more than our physical body, and actually become aware of the flow of life force through and around us. We may even experience our energetic connection to others. This occurs in conjunction with awe and joy for the process.

Stage 10: Ascent

There is an awareness of being - not as an intelligent being, but as intelligence itself; not as housing a Spirit, but as spirit itself. We experience our union with the creative force of the Universe. We transcend all limits, boundaries, language, judgment, and our existing sense of self. We receive the gift of knowing the oneness of all creation, and gain immense wisdom during the stage.

Stage 11: Descent

We are renewed beyond our limits and sense of self and enter into the world again. We know that we are part of all we perceive and responsible for what we know. We live without being attached to our situations. We love and serve life and others. We communicate with ourselves and others through our wounds instead of from them.

Stage 12: Community

We experience our involvement with humanity and recognize that wholeness comes from bringing our gifts of individuality into community. We recognize that all of our choices are spiritual ones and affect the entire globe of beings. Eventually we realize that the limits of what we can bring to community stems from our own lack of wholeness. Therefore we seek to re-experience the rhythm of earlier stages.
